The Big Rotary Cornish Coastal Footpath Challenge raises over £10,000

This August, Cornwall Mind embraced a huge challenge, The Big Rotary Cornish Coastal Footpath Challenge, led by the Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen.

Being unable to hold their usual weekly meetings, the members of the Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen were looking for a way to raise money for a good cause and also benefit the Clubs charity funds in these extra difficult times.  So, Cornwall Mind and 19 Rotary Clubs across the county joined together to raise mental health awareness and funds through sponsorship as well as improving their own mental health and wellbeing. Each club was asked to walk one or several sections of the Cornish coastal path and invite family and friends to join them. It was a fantastic, socially distanced, team effort and their motto for the event was ‘a good walk can do wonders for your mental wellbeing’.

Ian Bell, Rotary Club of Boscawen President said: “ By inviting the other Rotary Clubs in Cornwall to join in, we were able to help them raise much needed funds for their own causes too, and to get the entire 293 miles of footpath walked.  Sixteen clubs put “boots on the ground” with two more giving donations to Cornwall Mind. The good weather and wonderful coastal scenery helped us all to raise over £10,000, and have an enjoyable time doing so”.

Paul Reeve, CEO of Cornwall Mind said: “Cornwall Mind are delighted to have worked with the Rotary Clubs who took part in the Coastal Walk. Together we walked almost 1299 miles along our beautiful coastlines, raising money to support the people of Cornwall experiencing mental health problems. This event has been amazing especially in the face of the challenges of Covid. We are so grateful to everyone who organised this event and to those who took part”.

Pete Goss MBE is a Cornish sailor and adventurer, he supported this event with a personal video, which you can watch on Cornwall Mind’s You Tube Channel, and said: “We’ve all gone through coronavirus, none of us would have wished for it but it’s had many impacts and certainly mental health impacts, with the Rotary Clubs, Cornwall Mind can help people in need”.

A big thank you to Pete Goss MBE, and Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen for leading on this.
