Five Ways to Wellbeing
The Five Ways to Wellbeing is a set of evidence-based actions, developed by New Economics Foundation, to help improve mental health and wellbeing.
These five simple actions – connect, keep learning, give, take notice, and be active – are based on research showing that small, everyday changes can make a real difference to how we feel and function.
Our wellbeing groups are built around the Five Ways to Wellbeing. You will learn about each of the Five Ways, and how you can incorporate them into everyday life.
Making small changes to your lifestyle can help to build your resilience so that you are better prepared to deal with everyday life, as well as more difficult times. This can help you to stay well and feel good about yourself. It’s about finding something that works for you in your day-to-day life.
Our wellbeing groups also provide social contact, opportunities for friendship, and access to peer and professional support.
We run our groups in various locations across Cornwall.
The group is so friendly and relaxed, with no pressure at all – and we have fun too. I’m learning so much, and it’s become really special time that I genuinely look forward to.
Five Ways to Wellbeing
The following steps have been researched and developed by the New Economics Foundation.
Connect
There is strong evidence that indicates that feeling close to, and valued by, other people is a fundamental human need and one that contributes to functioning well in the world. Connect with your family, friends, the people around you. Building these connections will support and enrich you every day.
Be active
Regular physical activity is associated with lower rates of depression and anxiety across all age groups. Exercising makes you feel good. Step outside, take a walk, find an activity that you enjoy and make it part of your life.
Take notice
Reminding yourself to ‘take notice’ can strengthen and broaden awareness. Be curious, savour the moment. Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling.
Learn
Continued learning through life enhances self-esteem and encourages social interaction and a more active life. Try something new, learning new things will increase confidence as well as being fun.
Give
Individuals who report a greater interest in helping others are more likely to rate themselves as happy. Do something nice for a friend or stranger, smile, thank someone, volunteer your time. Look out as well as in.
